Note the monogrammed bathrobes and hand-embroidered face cloths.  Enjoy herbal or traditional tea from a fine bone china tea service or a cup of freshly ground coffee with Lodge-baked biscuits, NZ chocolates or fresh fruit from your butlers tray. And to bring you back to the present, each room is equipped with an iPod/iPhone dock and complimentary wireless broadband is available throughout the lodge.

CUISINE

Pen-y-bryn Lodge is proud to be a member of the Slow Food Movement (the international movement to save regional cooking), and a member of the Chaîne des Rôtisseurs. James Glucksman, your host and chef creates menus from around the world; European fine dining, a Chinese banquet, or cuisine from East Asia, South America, or the Middle East.

If you happen to be in Oamaru on a Sunday morning you really must visit the Oamaru Farmers Market, showcasing delectable food from around the region. Choose to lunch at Fleur’s Place in nearby Moeraki  -  this fish shack, built on the edge of the ocean, was chosen by British chef and food writer Rick Stein as the place he most wanted to visit.

EXPERIENCE

Visit Harbour-Tyne historical precinct, an area of splendid Victorian commercial buildings and warehouses, with numerous cafes and boutique shops. View the Yellow-Eyed Penguins and then enjoy the delightful penguin parade as little Blue Penguins cross the road on the foreshore to return to their nesting site.

Visit the Whitestone Cheese Factory and sample artisan cheese. Pick up a picnic lunch of cheese and breads from the Oamaru market and drive through the beautiful Waitaki Valley to sample the wines of Ostler, Kurow and Waitaki Braids.

THE OWNERS

James Glucksman and James Boussy (aka “the Jameses”) are your hosts. They have lived and travelled worldwide and adopted Oamaru as their new home when they purchased Pen-y-bryn Lodge in 2010.

James Glucksman had a career in international management consulting and healthcare for more than 20 years. He is fluent in Russian and Chinese, with a very good knowledge of French, Spanish and German as well as some limited Japanese and Hungarian! The lodge is a member of the Slow Food movement and James Glucksman an Officier Maître Hôtelier in the Confrérie de la Chaîne des Rôtisseurs, the Paris-based gourmet society, in the Bailliage of Christchurch.

James Boussy was trained as a dentist, and practiced in the US state of Virginia for 15 years before moving his practice to Beijing. James is also a highly skilled baker, gardener and home renovator and has made a name for himself among his friends for the exquisite gingerbread houses that he creates as the centrepiece of the Jameses’ annual Christmas party.

You really won’t want to leave this beautiful mansion, which is so warm and welcoming.
