How properties join the collection
Representing New Zealand’s best small places
Representation that’s personal
There are plenty of beautiful places to stay in New Zealand. But for a travel advisor sitting on the other side of the world, beautiful photographs and a good website only tell part of the story.
They want to know what a property is really like. Who it suits. Where it fits in an itinerary. What makes it worth recommending. And, importantly, whether they can book it with confidence.
That’s where Boutique Hotels & Lodges NZ comes in.
Since 2004, we’ve represented a carefully selected collection of independent boutique hotels, lodges, villas and retreats throughout New Zealand. We know every property we represent. We’ve stayed, met the owners and hosts, experienced the rooms, the food and the location, and understand what makes each one different.
So when we talk to the travel trade, we’re not simply passing on information from a brochure.
We’re talking from experience.
The right property. In the right place.
We don’t believe a collection becomes stronger simply by becoming bigger.
BHL is deliberately selective. We look for properties that bring something distinctive to the collection — whether that’s their location, style, price point, personality or the experience they offer.
It means our properties complement rather than simply compete with one another, and gives travel advisors genuine reasons to choose one BHL property over another depending on the traveller and the journey.
Connecting New Zealand with the world
Our focus is the travel trade.
We work directly with New Zealand inbound operators and DMCs, alongside wholesalers, luxury travel advisors, product managers and travel specialists in key international markets.
We take our properties to the people who sell New Zealand — through trade appointments, sales calls, webinars, industry events, familiarisation visits and ongoing relationships built over many years.
And because we know our properties personally, we can do more than tell an advisor where they are and what they cost.
We can tell them why their client should stay there.
What representation means at BHL Collective
01 — We know what we represent
Every BHL property is personally visited and vetted. We need to understand the experience ourselves before asking the travel trade to recommend it to their clients.
02 — We know the trade
More than two decades working within New Zealand tourism has built relationships that matter. We work closely with inbound operators, product managers, wholesalers and advisors — and understand what they need from a property before they can confidently sell it.
03 — Independent, but not alone
Many exceptional boutique properties don’t have large international sales teams behind them.
That’s where BHL fits.
We become an extension of the property’s own sales effort — creating visibility, opening doors, maintaining relationships and keeping the property front of mind with the people who influence and make bookings.
04 — We tell the story properly
No two BHL properties are the same, so we don’t market them as though they are.
A luxury villa in Russell needs a different story from a lakeside lodge in Taupō or a boutique retreat on Waiheke Island. We help the trade understand those differences — and, importantly, which traveller each property is right for.
05 — There’s a real person behind BHL
BHL is owner-led, and that matters.
Susan works directly with our properties and our travel trade partners. There’s no call centre and no layers of account management — just straightforward communication from someone who knows the properties, knows New Zealand and has spent more than 20 years building relationships within the industry.
Small by choice. Personal by nature.
We’re not trying to represent every luxury property in New Zealand.
We’d rather represent a carefully chosen collection exceptionally well.
For our properties, that means having someone actively representing them within the travel trade.
For our trade partners, it means having one trusted New Zealand contact who knows the collection first-hand and can help them find the right stay for the right client.
And for the traveller, it means discovering some very special places to stay around Aotearoa New Zealand — with genuine Kiwi hospitality at their heart.
Boutique Hotels & Lodges NZ.
Independent stays. Personally represented.
Three things, done properly
Global distribution
We connect properties with global travel networks and guide them through distribution — opening doors to the right people in the travel trade rather than the largest number of them.
Marketing that fits
No two properties are the same — location, style, size or price point — so the marketing is tailored to bring out what makes each one particular.
In the room
Trade shows, agent webinars and regular visits to key inbound partners. Susan does this personally, and many clients have been with us since our first year.
We've stayed in every one — know every host, every room.
Think yours belongs here?
We add slowly, and only after careful consideration. If you operate a property you think we ought to know, write and tell us about it — Susan reads them.
Everything you need, in one place
Images, video and brochures for all seventeen properties, property by property — plus one point of contact for the collection.
