Frequently asked
How the collection works, what a rate covers, and how to reach the places you have chosen.
Why stay in a boutique hotel in New Zealand?
Boutique hotels offer a unique, local experience with style and character you won’t find in big chain hotels. Personalised service, cosy spaces, and a true sense of place. Perfect for travellers seeking something special and memorable.
What makes a boutique hotel a luxury experience?
It’s the little things that count — great design, comfortable spaces and friendly, personalised service that makes you feel special. Throw in a beautiful spot, a few indulgent extras and some local charm, and you’ve got a luxury stay that’s relaxed, easy and truly Kiwi.
Who should consider a boutique hotel for their stay?
Couples, solo travellers, or anyone seeking a more personalised, laid-back stay with character and charm — a true Kiwi-style experience.
Is this a booking site?
No. Boutique Hotels & Lodges is a curated collection, not a booking engine. Send us an enquiry and we’ll point you to the right stay, or go straight to the property from its page — every one of the seventeen links out to its own site.
How were the seventeen chosen?
Slowly, and in person. Susan Roberts has been building the collection since 2004, and we have stayed in every one — we know every host and every room. Nothing joins because it applied.
Is there a minimum stay?
Several properties ask for two nights, and a few ask for more over Christmas and New Year. Where a minimum applies it is written on that property’s page, under Good to know.
What is included in the rate?
It varies by property, and each one lists it in full on its own page — breakfast almost always, and often evening drinks, canapés, WiFi, parking and the use of whatever the house has: a pool, bikes, kayaks, a sauna.
How do I get to each property?
Every property page carries a Getting here note — drive times, the nearest airport, the ferry where there is one. Ask us if you would like help fitting several together into one trip.
Where are the properties?
Across both islands, from the Bay of Islands to Otago. You can browse them by region, or filter the collection by region, style, guests, bedrooms and what the property has.
Do you work with travel agents and media?
Yes. There is a Working with us page for the trade, and a resources library with images, video and brochures for each property.
