Designed by Thomas Turnbull and built in 1901 for the Sisters of Mercy, the Convent was originally located next to St Mary’s Church in Blenheim.
Native timbers were extensively used in the construction including Matai, Rimu and Kauri. In 1994 the Convent was moved to its present location in Rapaura and complete restored under the guidance of architect Sir Michael Fowler. The interior layout has remained exactly as it was nearly 100 years ago, retaining its original charm and character.
Set on an estate of 60 acres of vineyard and parkland, knot gardens and lavender courtyards, together with an outdoor swimming pool, petanque and croquet. The Convent is now a unique sanctuary where original character features are combined with exquisite antique interior furnishings, European and New Zealand art. Guest areas include a billiard room with full sized antique billiard table along with an extensive DVD and CD library collection and games. The guest lounge features an open fire and opulent seating. Luxurious air conditioned suites, beautifully appointed, feature antique furniture, spacious bathtubs and separate showers, fresh cut flowers and handmade chocolates.
Relax around the pool, play petanque or croquet, wander round the extensive gardens or take one of our complimentary bicycles for a spin around the local vineyards. Marlborough holds international acclaim for being one of the finest wine regions in the world. Fine dining restaurants are situated nearby. Or for a moment of quiet contemplation, visit St Michaels, a charming little wooden church situated in the garden.
