Wander through to the open plan kitchen, have a glass of wine and am amazing choice of delicious foods just waiting for your to help yourself from the guest fridge which is available 24 hours a day! Chat with host and Ballymaloe trained Chef, Siobhan or step out onto the expansive outdoor stone terrace and admire the views out to Mt Maunganui and the Pacific Ocean.  Stunning!

Siobhan prepared delicious canapes and drinks in the evening prior to a fabulous 6 course degustation dinner, including New Zealand fine wines. Dinner here is included in the daily rate. And so to bed. Hand forged ironwork staircases transport you to this romantic haven located on the first floor. After a blissful sleep, we woke to a leisurely gourmet farmhouse breakfast, prepared by Siobhan. These chickens forage under the fruit trees and herb garden, lead by Lieutenant Bluey!

PEN-Y-BRYN LODGE OWNER NAMED CHANCELIER OF NEW ZEALAND CHAINE DES ROTISSEURS

James Glucksman to serve as Vice President on national committee of international gastronomic society

At a gala ceremony in Wellington on 25 July presided over by Jannece Tapsall of Australia, James Glucksman, chef/owner of Oamaru’s historic Pen-y-bryn Lodge, was named to the national committee of the Chaîne des Rôtisseurs, a Paris-based international gastronomic society that brings together people who appreciate and share a mutual interest in cuisine and wine. Glucksman will serve as Chancelier, a position that equates to the organisation’s “chancellor” in New Zealand, under Peter Besseling of Waipara, who will serve as Bailli, or President.

As part of Glucksman’s duties in his new role, he will seek to expand the activities of the Chaîne in New Zealand, and attract new members. “The Chaîne is the first and so far only gastronomic society that welcomes both professional and non-professional members,” Glucksman said, “and offers an unmatched opportunity for people who appreciate good food and wine to connect with others with similar interests.” Glucksman and Besseling aim to grow the New Zealand Chaîne to 150 members in the country’s three chapters or “bailliages”, located in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.

Glucksman has been a member of the Chaîne des Rôtisseurs for more than a decade, having joined as a non-professional in the United States before moving to China and becoming an active member of the organisation’s Beijing chapter. Upon relocating to New Zealand in 2010, Glucksman transferred his membership to the Christchurch bailliage.

“When preparing a meal for a Chaîne function, a chef will pull out all the stops since he or she knows that the diners have certain expectations and sophistication that other diners may not. As a member of the Chaîne myself, I aim to provide all our guests at Pen-y-bryn Lodge with a level of cuisine and service that is a step above what you might find in another establishment,” Glucksman said.

The Chaîne des Rôtisseurs was established in 1950 and traces its routes to the Frenchguild of goose roasters, founded in 1248 under the reign of King Louis IX. The Chaîne des Rôtisseurs today is a truly international gastronomic association, dedicated to honouring the preservation of the traditions and practices of the old French guild in a completely contemporary and international context.

The principal goal of the Chaîne des Rôtisseurs is to bring professional and non- professional, amateur members in over 80 member countries together to celebrate their passion for fine cuisines and wines and to aid and encourage the development of young chefs and sommeliers worldwide through its national and international competitions as well as provide international food support and aid to those in need.
