Located in the historic township of Oamaru on the East Coast of New Zealand’s South Island. Just a short drive up the hill from Oamaru’s main street, enter into another world and the grandeur of this spacious homestead will captivate you. From the main Entrance Hall through to the spacious Drawing Room, you are taken back to an earlier gracious era. Wander into the Library to browse a massive collection of books, including a section dedicated to cuisine – which is a speciality here at this luxury lodge – or relax in the Billiard Room complete with its full-sized competition table. An extensive verandah, outdoor terraces and restful gardens make Pen-y-bryn Lodge the perfect place to relax, unwind and indulge.
Five charming stylish guest rooms, each with its personalised name and character, have been appointed to the highest standard and feature pure cotton bed linen and wool underlays, duvets and comfortable feather & down pillows. The Elizabeth Room features an original claw-foot bath, taking one back to an era with time to relax. The Victoria Room features a walk-in shower. Both these ensuites have heated tiled floors, luxury toiletries, monogrammed bathrobes and hand-embroidered face cloths, adding a personal touch to your stay. Enjoy tea or plunger coffee, lodge baked biscuits, New Zealand chocolates or fresh fruit from your Butler’s Tray.
Three Annex rooms have been upgraded in 2015 and, at over 40sqm are the largest rooms at Pen-y-bryn Lodge. The Park Room, The Garden Room and The Nest offer split king beds, Satellite TV and each has a Nespresso machine. Enjoy herbal or traditional tea or coffee from a fine bone china tea service. Lodge baked biscuits, New Zealand chocolates and fresh fruit are complimentary. A sitting area with a sofa bed for use by a third person is an added feature in these three Annex rooms. Ensuites in the Annex have an oversize bathtub, a walk-in shower, bathrobes and luxury toiletries.
Each room is equipped with an iPod/iPhone dock and UFB Wi-Fi is complimentary throughout the lodge.
Cuisine is a speciality at the lodge and dining is recommended. James Glucksman co-host and chef creates menus from around the world whether it be fine European dining, a Chinese banquet or cuisine from East Asia, South America or the Middle East.
If you happen to be in Oamaru on a Sunday morning you really must visit the Oamaru Farmers Market, showcasing delectable food from around the region. Choose to lunch at Fleur’s Place in nearby Moeraki – this fish shack, built on the edge of the ocean, was chosen by British chef and food writer Rick Stein as the place he most wanted to visit. Visit Harbour-Tyne historical precinct, an area of splendid Victorian commercial buildings and warehouses, with numerous cafes and boutique shops.
