Kaikoura

Where is it? The historic seaside settlement of Kaikoura is situated midway between Christchurch and Picton on the South Island’s northern east coast. The road and rail lines hug the coast to certain points where the mountains meet the sea.

Why Kaikoura? Stunning views are afforded over crystal blue seas abounding with bird life and sea life including seals, dolphins and whales.
In the winter period the mountains are snow-capped for many months of the year, providing a year round playground.

The closeness of the mountains and the coast offers stunning coastal alpine scenery and a host of eco-tourism oriented activities. Whether you are looking for relaxation, nature, excitement, fine wines and good cuisine, art, history and culture, Kaikoura has a multitude of options.

Activities: Whaling, fishing and farming were at the centre of old Kaikoura’s history and today remnants of the Maori and European settlement of the area and Kaikoura's whaling history can still be seen by visiting the Kaikoura Museum and historic Fyffe House. The town is also home to numerous artists and craftspeople, all of whom incorporate local flavour into their designs. Local products can be seen in the galleries in and around the town, including gold gilding, pottery, paintings and prints, jewelry, wood turning, knitted garments and much more, or join the Art Trail starting at the Visitors Centre and see for yourself the artists at work in their own environment.

The area is known primarily for its whale watching and swimming with the dolphins but there are many other activities in the area suitable for all ages and energy levels:
