Historic Experiences
New Zealand recently celebrated its 150th year as a “colony”. The cities of Dunedin and Christchurch were among the first settled and Auckland and Wellington were mere “canvas towns” in the mid to late 1800’s.
The large homes built by wealthy early settlers were predominantly built of timber and many of these were destroyed by fire on in the 1950’s and 1960’s demolished to make way for “progress".
Our 2 historic boutique hotels, both built of timber are now restored to their former glory giving visitors to New Zealand an opportunity to experience the elegance of the past with modern facilities.
In the words of NZ writer Katherine Mansfield "I thank God I was born in New Zealand. A young country is a real heritage". Aachen House in Auckland, The Charlotte Jane in Christchurch and Kincaid Lodge in Kaikoura have all stood for over 100 years and are magnificently restored.
Our newest property Tahi Beach just 2.5 hours north of Auckland must be mentioned under "Historic" where one of their functions is protecting the native forest on this private 742 acre estate which includes many ancient trees with one kauri up to 1000 years old ! On our recent walk on the beach what appeared to us to be shells were actually moa bone chips - now that seriously old!
